Excuse me while I adjust my bulletproof vest. (shrug)...there, it's in place. I love Windows Vista.
I'll say it again... I LOVE Windows Vista. Because this might be a massive shock for everyone, let me step back and assure you all:
I don't and have never worked for Microsoft. I have never received any endorsement or compensation of any kind from Microsoft.
There.
I for one actually love Vista.
It's a slick, clean operating system with a clean interface.
Have there been problems? yes. Have there been bugs? Yes. I will however go on record as saying that I have recently had NO problems with Windows Vista.
I remember that when I had XP, I had spyware attacks ALL the time. My PC would slow down ALL the time.
I had to actually create system images to restore back to. I think that a lot of people (naturally) are scared of change and after several service packs for XP, are comfortable. I understand that.
Some of the reasons that you will love Vista too:
It's fast: With a decent PC, Windows Vista is the fastest consumer O.S. that Microsoft have ever developed. My boot up time is approximately 27 seconds (till login prompt).
It's reliable: I haven't had to worry about spyware and viruses the same way I did for XP. I use anti spyware/virus programs and my PC is healthy as ever.
My games work great.
My applications work great.
It's easier and more intuitive to use.
I love the dreamscene background videos
UAC actually is a good thing
I do know that in 2008, people will take a second look at Vista and begin to leave XP.
By the way, I hated the betas of Vista and even wrote about them on my website (http://www.windows-vista-update.com).
I thought it was slow and clunky and aero was a waste of time.
Now though, I am sold.
I use more applications than 99% of users out there and have had very few problems with my apps.
Remember people, it is the responsibility of the various VENDORS to make their applications Vista compatible, not Microsoft.
Most serious vendors have made their apps Vista compatible.
People, you really should think about buying new hardware. A lot of you whining about Vista have older PC's.
If you have an old PC, you have two choices: Stay with XP and quit whining or get with the program, drag your ass into 2008 and buy a new PC.
Look, with Vista (as in life), you get what you pay for.
I have a PC with a fast cpu and graphics card and 3.2 gigs of ram. By mid 2008, that type of hardware will be between $500 to $700.
At that point, a lot of criticism will fade away.
My system performance is fantastic and I have never been so happy
Also, just buy Vista Ultimate and be done with it. You might as well have all the features available to you for a few dollars more.
I would also like to formally respond to this crappy article from Ben Patterson (Yahoo).
He said:
"Where to begin? Vista arrived in stores months late, forced untold thousands of users to upgrade their hardware, made mincemeat of software and drivers that worked perfectly well in XP, ended up lacking many of the bold-faced features we'd been promised, and came saddled with new and annoying set of video DRM schemes. At least Vista now boasts an option for downgrading back to XP."
I believe his rage is misdirected.
What he is REALLY responding to is Microsoft's failure to manage the message and marketing for Vista.
To me, Microsoft is guilty of one thing and one thing only...bad PR.
They haven't managed the expectations of the public properly, the ad campaigns have been a mess and the messages out of Redmond have been muddled.
Having said that, the product is (now) fundamentally great and I am now unable to EVER go back to XP.
Those people who have good hardware and Vista would say that there's absolutely no way it's one of the worst products of 2007.
Microsoft are also caught in this cyclical trap they created for themselves. When to release a new OS and let the last one go?
It's always difficult.
People, let's be honest, you got cozy and comfortable with XP and you don't want to let go.
People, it's TIME TO LET XP GO.
One last thing.
I am sick and tired of people whining about User Account Control (UAC). Those are the annoying prompts that warn you when something is about to change on your system.
Seriously complaining about this is an example of geeky elitism and people who have forgotten about the over 35er's who use computers.
Some older or less tech savvy people SHOULD be stopped when they are about to screw up their PC's!
They NEED a message to warn them when they are about to do something wrong!
for this reason, I am big enough to 1) Turn it off for me and 2) leave it on for my mom's PC.
Just because you are as geeky as I am, don't lose sight of the rest of the world.
Viva Vista!!
