Installing windows Vista: So, the first thing that I thought while installing this beta was ...they're kidding right? This is a joke right? Someone tell me this isn't happening.
It takes quite a while to install this operating system. When burnt to a DVD and installed, it took me about 45 minutes to an hour to install this from scratch. My PC was a 3.0Ghz machine with 1 gig of ram and a 256 meg graphics card.
I will add that my DVD player was an 8x player so I hope that had something to do with it.
The install process was pretty simple....
1) Insert DVD
2) Reboot PC (to DVD)
3) OS begins to load from disc
4) You begin the wait...
5) Still waiting...
6) Still waiting...
7) Basic OS files loading
8) Request for serial number
9) Install continues and 2 more reboots required....
10) Vista installed, user prompted for Administrator user name (approx 55 minutes later)..
After going through the process once, the first thing I thought was, the average consumer would be PISSED off at having to wait that long. The only way this thing will work for the average consumer would be if DVD players are averaging 48x by the time it's released..
On the other hand, it was a pretty straightforward install and once I put the DVD in, it never really required my intervention. So that sounds like talking out of both sides of my mouth but let's keep this in mind..I AM A GEEK..I don't mind waiting but I assume a lot of people who buy this will...
Anyway, once you get your admin credentials established, voila...you're now in Vista...
One more thing... I will go into more detail later but I am very very concerned that for the first hour after the install, while I just played around...it just felt that my PC wasn't enough for this beast...
The concept of a 3 GHz chip, 1 gig of ram and a 256 meg graphics card not delivering more than enough horsepower is scary...
Till next time,
Adieu..
