Cant detect Linksys WRT54G?

by Robert L McFarland
(Cedar Rapids, IA USA)

I'm trying to upgrade from a Linksys BEFW1s4 (wireless B) to a Linksys WRT54G (wireless G) routers.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 and my ISP is Qwest with an Actiontec M1000 modem then goes to the router.

The new router came with software to help install it but when it gets to find the new router it says it is not detected.

Now here is the weird part about it now, if I hook up the new router and just put the cable from the modem to a port and not the internet in port it works, but can’t find the set up page (192.168.1.1) to change the settings.

Mainly I will be using it wirelessly, so I need to be able to get to the set up page to turn it on.

Can anyone help me on this or have any suggestions?
