Cant Open Email attachments in MSN while using Vista 64 bit?

I'm having trouble opening my email attachments in MSN.

It doesn't matter what attachment I try to open the list of programs comes up to chose from and when I select Word program for a Doc.

file or I select Adobe Reader for all PDF. files I still can't get the attachment to open straight into that program?

It will only work if I save that file to my hard drive first? Is this a Vista problem? Could it be conflicting with my Office Pro 2003?

I installed Office Pro 2003 in the place of Microsoft Works which came with the new computer along with Windows Vista so I could open and view past work I did in Office Pro 2003.

I have a feeling this is causing the problem as I have already scaned through my security settings and they seem to be ok and not interferring.
