Choppy Sound & Graphics on HEARTS game of all things!

So why is my Hearts game (you know, the basic, pre-installed one) so darn choppy? It runs fine for a while, then gets really choppy on the graphics AND on the sound. And it can slow way down, too. Sometimes it clears up, sometimes it is choppy and slow for a while. (I have issues with how slowly the game runs when it's NOT acting up, anyway - any slower makes it painful!)
Any clue why it's doing this? Is it Vista? Is it my laptop? You'd think something as BASIC as Hearts would run fine...
