Cloning or restoring backup of Vista

I have attempted to image, copy, clone various versions of Vista with Business, Ultimate.
With out fail it never works, I have tried the Vista backup and restore.
This does not work very well since you have to reload the software back to make it work.
The other applications listed below also do not work from either tape, dvd, or drive image.

Nortons Enterprise
R-image
Drive Clone
Paragon
Active@ Image
Symantec Backup exec 11d
Acronis Image home
Acronis Disk Director.
Any information on this matter it would be great.
