Do not install!!

by Will G.
(Howell, Michigan. USA)

And if you don't believe me, check out the other comments here as well as other sites.

You will be hard pressed to find many positive remarks about service packs.

I Installed sp1 and sp2 back to back so not sure which one caused the problems, but I will say that after the two updates, my dvd rom was no longer recognized; as though I didn't have a cd drive at all...and my monitor kept going into hibernation.

It would black out and I'd get a message that there was 'no vga or dvi input, monitor will now go to sleep'.
My warranty had expired so no help from Dell.

I have 'watchdog' service from Circuit city till 2011 but the kids there know less than I do. Worthless service!

I then spent hours in the system, attempting to tweak power management settings, updating monitor and graphics drivers, etc., etc...hours on the web trying to locate help (with no success at all!)... I finally had enough and actually punched my brand new flat/wide-screen monitor, with much regret.

I decided to try something that I wasn't sure was going to work or not... I opened my cpu and disconnected my dvd-rom and graphics card, reconnected them and rebooted.

It was a miracle but my system now recognized my rom drive again and my monitor has not crashed since.

I then uninstalled sp1 and sp2 and will never update again.

I should have known not to install them, in fact I did know because of issues I had updating win XP.

But I figured maybe, just maybe Micro-crap would have gotten smarter.

Big mistake! For the record, I always turn off 'automatic updates'. As should you.

Sincerely yours.
Ciao
