Finally after about a year of this problem, with your comments, I have a work around. Thanks !!
First a note about my use of dual monitors, I use a laptop with dual monitors at work and single laptop screen at home so for me, taskbar AUTOHIDE is a must.
Using your comments, I experimented a little more and found that by placing the mouse over the taskbar (so it shows itself) before removing the 2nd monitor, the problem does not occur. I will try it over the next few days a report back if this is unreliable.

I have the same with Acer having NVIDIA Geforce GO 7300. I must always kill explorer then restart it to recover the taskbar. A while later I can get a BSOD (blue screen of death) though grrrr. Still have no solution, tried disabling all hooks using shexview.exe but this didn't help.
