I have a gateway FX7026 with a geforce 8800gt and 4 gigs of ddr2 memory and this thing handles nearly everything I have thrown at it.
Only 1 game "shattered union" refused to play. Have not tried any dos games but I would use dosbox to run them. As far as Win95/98/me/xp games;
I can run the windows versions of X-com, Master of orion 2 space empires 4, shadowgrounds, darkstar one...you name it... flawlessly.
I have only come across 2 problems in the past year. 1: Vista 64 installs any 32 bit program in "program files (x86)" folder.
Now this is only a problem if the software your trying to install was written to be installed in "program files" only and the option for a "custom install" was not programmed into the software.
This is a problem caused by shortsighted programmers and NOT a Vista problem. 2:memory. I have heard a lot of complaints of vista 64 not running or crashing and erratic performance issues.
Every one of these people had systems with 2 gigs or less of system memory. 4 gigs seems to be the sweet spot. My system has only crashed once and it was due to overheating.
It was in the 90's in my computer room and I can't think of any computer that would like that. I have left my system running for up to a week at a time with absolutely no problems.
On my last system with XP pro; if I left it running overnight, I would usually wake to find a crashed system the next morning.
As far as drivers go. I have had NO problems with finding 64 bit drivers for ANY piece of hardware or software that I have thrown into this rig.
Vista 64 with 4 gigs or more of memory is simply the best and most stable OS I have ever worked with.
