Help! I'm in tears! Vista is so frustrating

I've been trying to get several programs initialized on my new computer.
They just spin and spin endlessly. If I press ctr-alt-del and select task manager, a little green box is put in the task bar, but it does nothing when I click on it.
If I try to shut down using the switch, the computer only starts in the window that allows safe mode. I'm totally stuck.
I've started this thing about 20 times hoping for something different each time, but nothing changes. Vista just spins and spins and spins . . . what am I supposed to do?
Who's around to call these days? I tried connecting to windows update and the screen comes up blank. Microsoft, why did you do this to us? I used to be a big Microsoft supporter.
I'm no dummy when it comes to computers; been operating them since the 70's. . . My kid needs a new computer for college, but this????????
I'm ready to throw this thing against the wall . . .
