Ive got a lexmark z1380 with the same problem ive installed it fine under xp but on my vista home premium i went the disk way around it and even though it said everything was successful there was no printer installed and when i tried the plug and play method it just said driver install failed or access denied .

 940C fine on my Vista setup

My new medion PC asked me to choose the printer and when 940C was selected it installed its own driver and works well. But the colour management is a bit wonky; slightly dark and I have not quite got it sorted.

I don't think it's an HP driver problem. I have a 940c running under Vista Home Premium and the drivers built into Vista work just fine.
