Windows Vista Update

i cannot open or run down loads or attachments

When i try to download anything it seems to go through all the steps but then you can not locate or open the file,it comes up with an error message saying it is missing the shortcut.

It is the same when try to open an email attathechment.

I am using vista businesson a asus notebook and am only learning what iam doing so do not want to play with settings i do not totally understand, any help will be appreciated thank you
