I have just tried to install Vista SP1 on an Asus F5R notebook.
Machine has only 512 RAM and Vista Home Basic (could there be a worse OS ?)
Initial installation took one and half hours, ended with 'Installation Complete' and 'Need to reboot' so I did just that. Next message, half way through a slow shutdown, was 'Do not turn off your computer. Installing SP1 2%' This took another hour, then notebook shut itself down.
The next morning, switch on notebook, took a while to display anything other than mouse arrow, then "Installing Vista SP1 part 1/3 1%" this took another ninety minutes.
After final reboot, No network connections - ethernet connection dead and not in devices list. Installed USB to Ethernet adaptor, downloaded latest drivers from Asus, Installed them. Still no built-in ethernet.
Uninstall SP1. The slider on the 'Please wait...' window opened at about 75% done. An hour later it had reached about 80%. 10 minutes later it finished ! Asked for a reboot. Now saya 'Uninstalling Service Pack stage 1 of 3 - 10% completed Do not turn off your computer.'
Much later - Network is working again.
SP2 on XP all over again - don't they learn ?
