Some Comments
by: x64

x64 OS have some a few different requirements as the Kernel architecture is defferent.

In short I believe the best advantage of a x64 OS is the ability to realize more than 3 GB of RAM. For example if you have a x32 OS and have 4 GB of Ram installed you will only realize about 3.125 of it. So if you have more than 3 GB or ram...get an x64 OS.

Also you should note that all of your Hardware Drivers need to be x64 compatible. So take inventory of all your hardware components nd see if the have a x64 driver.

Further - the software you install (excluding driver and Anti-virus) can usually be either x32 or x64 as windows will detect it as install it in the x32 folder and use WOW to run it. Google "x64 WOW" and you'll find more info.

Also Microsoft will be phasing out x32 OSs releases...so for future OSs past Windows 7 their might not be x32 support.

For antivirus - you MUST have one that is x64 compatible...most likely it will say before you download it. This is beacuse x64 OSs dont usually allow programs to touch the Kernal - and x32 anti-viruses try to protect the Kernal...i.e. you will get an error.

One I use is "Free AVG". Single download (doesnt have 2 different downloads for x32 and x64) and is compatible with x64 bit systems. Also isnt a system resource hog. Just download and install and you should be good. Hope that helps.

Also FYI - this is a small bit of information about x64 systems. As mentioned above if you really want to know more do some research...google is your friend.

Do your research!
by: Bill Whittaker

You have to do your research!

Verify that your hardware and applications will work with Vista 32 bit (or even 64 bit). I didn't have to go far (google) to find articles speaking of problems with going to 64 bit.

Also, browse the HP, Dell, etc. websites. You will find that they generally recommend Vista Home Premium 32 bit, which is what I use.
