You have described the exact same problem that I'm having.

So far, I have found no straightforward solutions.

The most realistic one appears to be to get a download of the EPSON driver for VISTA, and then extract the INF file using UNZIP.

Then point the network driver to it.

The problem is where to find the EPSON driver because EPSON does not supply it. EPSON has bundled it with the VISTA package.
