New Computer with Vista? Start Fresh!
I purchased a refurbished Dell Demension from their factory outlet over a year ago. It was factory installed with Vista Home Premium.
It was okay at first, but soon ( a few months) experienced bugs and glitches and began slowing down. It got worse and finely crashed.
I couldn’t save it so I took the factory OS disk that came with the computer and installed it, overwriting the crashed version. I lost most of my personal data but it was worth it.
I had a clean slate to work with and was able to customize and tweak it for my own experience. Fortunately about that time, SP1 was available for down load. You need it. It has been running fast and smooth ever since.
I think the old factory installation was so full of needless bonus crap and such, it was at fault for a sluggish, buggy running system to start with.
So, I think when one buys a new computer with a factory installed Vista OS, the first thing to do is take the proprietor OS disk, which should be included, and re-install over the factory version, and start fresh.
It should run great from then on, with SP1 installed. I never turn off my computer. It’s online 24/7. I love Vista, it’s just fine. I don’t know what all the hoopla is about.
It does need constant updating and periodic maintenance which is a given. By the way the old factory version wasn’t completely wiped out.
The basic components of the OS, and C directory were compressed into a folder called Windows.old in the new C directory, and you can review the Windows.old folder.
Don’t expect to extract any program files that are listed, their ‘.exe’ application files seem to be wiped out.
All in all, Vista runs just fine for me. Hope this helps out new buyers.
