Thank you for all your answers. It seems as if I must upgrade to the 64 bit version, or wait and see if Vista will fix it in the 32 bit Service pack upgrade.

It sounds to me like you are running Vista 32 which can't make use of the entire 4GB. You'lll need to upgrade to Vista 64

unless your running 64 bit O/S it will only support
3gb of ram.

Any 32 bit version of vista will only recognize 3 gb of ram ... if you want the other gb, you will have to upgrade to a 64 bit version (ultimate).

Your Computer can only access up to 4 gb of memory.
If you have lets say a 512 mb video card and programs that use system memory just as an example
and these items added up to just under 1 gb of ram take off that total from install ram and there you go.
