Opening email attachments in Windows Vista

I have Windows Mail - i can't get anything open - a simple doc file - when I try to open it, the message says: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

Create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel."

How do I do this? It's very annoying.
