i payed 143.68 canadian dollars for vista home premium and downloaded ( for free and burned a cd that cost 23 cents) ubuntu 7.10 at the time i built my new computer
AMD X2 4200
1GB DDR 2 667 (i know vista needs at least 2gb of ddr 2)
250 GB SATA 2 HDD SEAGATE
mobo msi
VISTA HOME PREMIUM
vista setup took about 35 minutes but there was about 4 hours of updates ( shaw high speed cable)and three reboots to complete and i had to search for about 3 weeks ( some manufactures took longer )for vista drivers for my web cam and epson cx 6000 all in one ( but for my creative 2gb zen stone plus the drivers were ready right away )
system performance is sluggish ( not too slow but not even close to as fast as ubuntu)
UBUNTU
25 minutes to install and ten minutes to update and 1 reboot
performance is very good everything worked right away (creative 2gb zen stone plus and epson cx6000 and on board sound and video (ati x1200) and logitech cordless desktop combo and x-5300 speakers) all except the restricted drivers i needed to watch videos and dvd's ( which took a few minutes too install)
so which is a better value ... well i think it is obvious ... winner ubuntu
vista has crashed about 5 times so far in the past two months since i installed it and ubuntu has never crashed ... winner is ubuntu
in the past two months i have spent at least 30 or 40 hours running security scans ( anti virus and anti spyware ) in vista and on ubuntu i have not run any scans
so ubuntu seems like a better faster and more secure operating system and i will continue using it and vista i should never have tried it ( perhaps win xp would of been a far better choice for me ) as it has been a waste of time and money
i am not a avid gamer so i should not have spent the money on a microsoft product imho
Microsoft sucks
so the 143.68 that i spent on vista i could of used to get a very good graphics cards and maybe extra ram ( but ubuntu does not really need anymore than 1gb)
good luck everyone and take care
