Speakers not working when skype is not working

After getting my new computer with vista, I installed a skype phone and now my speakers will not work.

If If I unplug the USB skype phone the speaker icon says "no audio output device installed" I have tried system restore but that always comes up with an error.

It seems that the system will only recognize the USB phone.

Consequently this is somewhat maddening as plugging in speakers is about as basic as you can get.

I do not have much confidence in this system and am now disappointed and worried about other potential flaws.
