System hangs up

Hi,
This is Selva. Am having a Dell Laptop with good config (4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo Processor., Vista OS etc).

Nowadays I see my system hangs up very often. Tat too When Im working with skype it hangs up suddenly and it never gets back soon.

Once its hung, My system gives a noise just lik the noise we hear from the system when writing process is going on.

Every time the system hangs up, I have to long press the power button and then start the machine once again.

Earlier I was using Avira anti virus. At one point of time, The icon of Anti virus became unknown icon format.

The system didnt recognize the icon. Form then, I have been facing this problem very often.

Im using Bit defender anti virus now. Could this anti virus be a problem? I have the windows update installed in my machine.

Could these latest windows updates be the cause for system hang up? Some days, I had to restart my machine for around 10 times.

Could anyone please suggest me what coud be the problem whether this problem is with hardware or software or something else?

Please give me some ideas to get rid of this problem with my laptop.
