Vista - cant even play DVDs!

by Mark
(Auckland, NZ)

Sorry - but Vista so far is a waste of time for me. Especially the windows media player 11 - right from installation it has been unable to play Almost every DVD (commercial pre-recorded DVDs) - the one time it did was after 5 attempts to play and three shutdowns and restarts because the kids were desperate to see a movie on the new laptop - and it has not repeated that accident since.

Totally unimpressed.

It takes about two minutes to boot up and often takes nearly five minutes to shutdown! I have only loaded ONE piece of software onto the system since installing it - I frankly dont trust the vista system as it often hangs and has to be cold booted. Give me XP any day before Vista.

In total contrast my three year old second hand Apple IBook G4 using OSX 10.4(got a few weeks before the vista laptop) boots up in approx 30 seconds, shutsdown in ten secs and plays every DVD without ever hesitating.

But since some of the programs I need are only available for windows I'm stuck with the new vista laptop. I'll try adding some more memory as the vista system analyser says my RAM is a 2x, while my CPU is a 4x. Hope I'm not throwing away good money after bad...
