I agree with you 100% in all you said. Vista is definitely a step forward.
Too many folks expected a LEAP forward though, and are just too into themselves to realize what progress has been made.
Sure there are some things I dislike about Vista, like they seem to have dumbified a few things too much.
Like the picture import utility no longer allows you to choose what pictures from a camera you will import, it just does them all.
And the layers needed to go through to fix network problems are way too much. I'd rather have just the simple nuts and bolts access to the network.
But, as a stable, fast and easy to use system, Vista is the only way to go.
To that I'll add 64-bit has finally come of age too!
Vista Ultimate in 64-bits is the best experience any user, and especially power users, will ever have with a PC.
One word: SOLID If you have a system that has a good driver set, you'll say goodbye to crashes and problems that you've had to deal with in Windows XP and before.
Drivers are paramount though. nVidia drivers in my experience so far have been aweful.
So go either Intel or AMD/ATI and you'll be extremely pleased with 64-bit. Also be sure to get at least 4 gig memory to do so. 8 is even better.
Memory is dirt cheap these days, so that is not an issue.
If you hate change, and like fighting computer problems, then by all means, stay with XP.
