Windows Installer could not be accessed

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64 bit.

I am trying to install Apple itunes 8 (for Vista 64 bit) so my wife and I can sync our iphones.

The program won't install because of this error: "The Windows Installer could not be accessed.

This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

I have been given the run around by Apple, Microsoft and HP who all say it is the others concern to resolve.

I have a great computer and operating system, but I'm currently having difficulties.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cliff & Alice
