Windows Photo Gallery

I have bought a Canon 40D camera and when I try to view my Raw files it will not allow me to do so.
It says that the format is not supported or I do not have the lates updates to photo gallery.
I have an Adobe program that allows me to view them through it. Why not in Photo gallery?
