Had the same problem...how to fix it, read on.
by: Anonymous

Hey,

I had the same problem and tried to "repair" and ran about a million different virus scans only to find out that the "UAC" needed to be turned ON. Eventhough you may be listed as an "Administrator" your problem may be as simple as checking the "UAC" box as the Administrator in your User Setup features. It is a "check" box that allows "ADMINISTRATOR" permissions. Simply click on "Start", "Control Panel", "User Accounts and Family Control Panel", "User Accounts"... then at the bottom you should see a Security Sheild with the words "Turn User Account Control on or off". After you have turned it "ON" it should require you to restart your computer (and give you many warnings as well). Turn it ON and RESTART and then you can successfully install the necessary updates without any problems. WARNING!!!! ONLY INSTALL NECESSARY UPDATES - THEN SHUT DOWN - THEN RESTART to insure Updates have successfully installed. WARNING!!! Then RESTART computer and TURN OFF UAC (follow earlier procedure) and RESTART computer and everything will be fine. DO NOT LEAVE UAC "ACTIVE/ON" or you WILL be vulnerable.

Good luck. Hope this works for you as it did for me. It took months of trial and error. And HOURS on the phone with "paid technical support" that knew less about computers (and the English language) than I did.

Let me end on a positive note, I love challenges, and I really do like the New Windows Vista.

Sincerely,

tone
