Windows Vista Business 6.0 Could Not Detect A Dial-up Modem

by Michelle Mathew
(Maple Valley, WA)

I had purchased my Sony VAIO VGN-TZ130N/B Notebook with Windows Vista Business 6.0 in August 2007. Until now I had always used wireless.

But I am going to be on the road and need access to the Internet via dial-up.

First of all I have not made any changes to my computer software or hardware.

I connected a working phone line into the RJ11 jack on my computer then selected Start-Control Panel-Network and Internet.

Then under Network and Sharing Center - I selected Connect to a network.

At the left hand bottom I selected - Set up a connection or network - then I highlighted Set up a dial-up connection and clicked on the Next button.

In the Set up a dial-up connection window I get the following message: "Windows could not detect a dial-up modem." "Is the modem connected?" "Is the modem switched on?"

Then gives me two options:"Try again" or "Set up a connection anyway" When I selected "Try again" option nothing happens it just stays at the same display.

When I select the "Set up a connection anyway" option it displays a window "Type the information from your Internet service provider".

I then enter my Verizon online access number and my account information then select the Create button.

I then get a message "The wizard cannot create the connection." I checked in the Device Manager and under Modems the driver displays HDAUDIO SoftV92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP.

I check the properties and it states this device is properly working. Also under the Dianostics tag I clicked on the Query Modem button and the connection states successful commuication to the modem.

The driver for the Wondows Fax and Scan does work and I can hear the modem dialing. So that makes me believe it is a problem with Vista for setting up a dial-up script.

I contacted Sony Support Chat and was instructed to reinstall the driver from the VAIO Recovery Center. I did what was instructed and it did not change my situation.

I got online with Sony Support Chat again and was sent to a "Windows Vista Help and How-to Troubleshoot network and Internet connection problems" web page on the Microsoft web site: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/33307acf-0698-41ba-b014-ea0a2eb8d0a81033.mspx. None of the suggestions help the dial-up issues I have.

It mostly pertained to configuring and managing the existing network connections, which I dont have for dial-up because Windows won't let me create one.

I downloaded the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor 1.0 tool and scanned my computer for compatible devices and it stated no information found on the HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP device.

I am at a loss and I cant find anyone with any kind of expertise to help me.

Here's hoping that my problem might get expedited to a more advanced technician?

Thank you.

Michelle
